Concord wildlife control Tip of the Month:

How Could I Tell If a Bat Is Sick?
While they are small critters that only weigh about 2 ounces, a bat poses a bigger health risk to you than you may have considered. Not only could these animals bite or scratch you, but they are the carriers of a number of diseases. Anyone of which could pose a serious health risk to you, especially considering that some bats carry rabies. If you see a bat swooping down around you during the night you are likely already trying to get away from it, but you should become more concerned if a bat presents itself as potentially sick. However, you may not know what to look for. Here are some tips that will tell you if a bat is sick.

Flying During the Day
The most obvious way to tell if a bat is sick or severely brain damaged is if it is flying during the daytime. These are nocturnal creatures with good reason. A bat cannot see very well at all, making it a sitting duck for most predators. At nighttime, they have a huge advantage because of their superior hearing and sense of smell. The instinct of this animal is to avoid daylight if at all possible so, if it is out during the day, the animal is likely suffering from some kind of severe illness. Wild animals that are sick will act in erratic and aggressive ways. If you see a bat out during the daytime, runaway!

Is It Drunk?
If the bat is flying erratically that is another sign to you. Maybe it is crashing into walls or other objects. It also could be moving in an extremely unusual or "drunk" like way. This is likely a sign that something is wrong with the animal's brain, which could be caused by a severe illness. Because of its erratic behavior, you can only imagine how erratic it will behave when it comes close to you. Even if it doesn't attempt to hurt you, it could still run into you, putting parasites or bacteria onto you. You really need to be careful in this case as well.

Discharge
While our hope is that you never get close enough to a bat to see this firsthand, a bat who is suffering from any number of diseases will have a discharge around its mouth or eyes. This is especially true in the case of rabies. While we most commonly associate rabies with dogs, the same symptoms appear in bats as well. A foaming at the mouth is assigned the animal has rabies. You may notice other types of discharge around the eyes or mouth, however. These are all symptoms of an illness. There are other symptoms that act as indicators, but most of these require you to get closer to the bat. Something we don't recommend that all. Your primary way of telling that there is something wrong with the animal is by how it is flying or behaving. If you see erratic behavior, it is time to run!
